002 Acts of Kindness
Characters: Darres & Anyone
Setting: Floor 3 (Library), 10 (Aquarium), 19 (Sec. Library)
Format: Either
Summary: Darres is going about some of his usual routines around the tower.
Warnings: None?
[Floor 3 (Library)]
[Darres was in here for the same reason he always came to this floor. The knight was in search for some decent, non-dark story books to read to Quark. The knight was even more protective of the child than he use to be. Having the kid die in his arms, anyone would become more caring of another. While death was not permanent here, it still pang him that he wasn't able to prevent it. The best he could do was try to keep the kid from slipping into the darkness that the tower taunted its residents with. This round, Darres was in search of particularly happy stories he could read to Quark. He could be found around the library collecting books.]
[Floor 10 (Aquarium)]
[The aquarium was more therapeutic for the knight than anything. He was continually rattled as his stay here grew longer. Back home he wasn't quite so useless as he was finding himself to be here. He wanted to save those who wanted it. Darres wants to help those who couldn't help themselves, but he was finding it to be rather difficult with how he was thwarted.
The knight was peacefully stationed in part of the aquarium where the fish roamed freely. Jumping from tank to tank and going about their business as if he wasn't here. There was a certain beauty to them that he found to be soothing. It was a nice break from the chaos that constantly plagued the tower. He himself was almost at peace?]
[Floor 19 (Second Library)]
[Darres decided it was time he really buckled down and hit the books to better his knowledge of things outside of his world. He wasn't sure how long he was going to be away from it, and as far as he was concerned, knowledge was a useful tool in various situations. The knight was diligently digging through the science portion of the library trying to better himself in the science field. From what he's gathered, the tower was full of this theme.]

[Hm. The knight glanced from fish to fish. The colorful ones caught his attention the most. Despite the danger it was peaceful.]</small.
no subject
It's terrible...here.
[He stared at the fish for a moment, before looking up at Darres.]
What do you do to stay so calm?
no subject
Darres was taken aback by the question. How does he answer that?]
I've always been this way?
no subject
Ganta doesn't always see what's right in front of him. Sometimes, literally.
He glanced back up.]
Oh, I ...see. So you just... stay yourself, then?
[Ganta would have given anything to be able to go back to being himself. But, hey. Things happened.]
no subject
I don't know how to be anything else.
no subject
Well, what I mean is... most people would have lost themselves to this place. [Most people like him.]
Most people wouldn't be that... strong. [He secretly admired that Darres was able to do that, okay?]
no subject
Her majesty--[well] my wife has lived through many trials. [Many where he wasn't around to protect her, and he can't help but feel a little guilty about it even if he had no control over it.] She's a strong person, but she's still human. We all are.
Everyone needs someone to fall back into.
no subject
I guess... [He is thinking about Shiro, now, and his demeanor changes a bit. Who the hell does he have to protect, without her around? Suddenly, his mood sours a bit.]
But, ...falling back on people can be dangerous. If you rely on people, you become comfortable with having them around; and, in the end, everyone lies or... abandons you. Whether they mean to, or not...
[He shifts his stance, and takes a couple of steps away from Darres, looking ready to leave.]
Sorry, I didn't mean to take my... [whatever this is...] feelings out on you.
no subject
Don't apologize for being open. It's probably not healthy to let those feelings sit.
[The knight folded his arms over his chest trying to figure out how to combat what Ganta might have experienced in his world and here.]
I don't think you should treat each experience as the same, or assume your experience will result with the same outcome. Exposing your vulnerability will always make it easy for you to get hurt, but not everyone is out to cheat you.
[He's not sure...if he's saying the right things, but he has a general idea where Ganta was coming from.]
I...[Darres wasn't sure if it was appropriate to bring this up. Normally he would never reveal his past, but in the tower he was doing many things he wouldn't normally do.] Use to be an orphan. I lived on the streets, and treated each day like it would be my last. [You never really knew if you were going to fall ill, or die of starvation. Guards ignored the slums, not wanting to have any part in it.]
But my chapter drew to a close when one of the Generals of my wife chose to adopt me and took me under her wing because she saw potential. She wanted me, a mere commoner, to protect the princess of our country upon my 18th birthday. Truth be told, I have watched over her and protected her ever since she wanted me to become her personal royal [babysitter] guard. There's no length I won't achieve to insure her safety.
[He kind of rambled didn't he? He was bad at this.]
I guess what I'm trying to say is you can rely on people if you let them. Don't be afraid to come to me if you need help. I'll do what I can. Don't feel like you have to take it all on by yourself. In the tower especially, it's important to grow bonds.

Ganta had stopped walking as soon as Darres began his (what turned out to be very long) speech. About halfway through it, he slowly turned his head to look at the guy. Towards the end... he was looking away, again. His expression softened greatly, and he could feel a lump in his throat. This guy didn't even know him... know anything about him... yet he had managed to read him. Was Ganta that easy to read? Really?
The black-haired teenager tensed a moment at that thought, before turning to frown at Darres. He was frowning to (hopefully) distract the person from the fact that he was about to cry.]
I don't even know you... L-look, you don't know anything about me, okay!
[He tensed again as the tears threatened to break the surface. Turning his head, he angrily wiped at his eyes. Damn it, he was always crying!]
I get... what you're trying to say. I really do. But...
[But you're making him feel warm and fuzzy and he hates you for it, Darres.]
no subject
I understand if you don't trust me, but I'll still try to help you. You don't deserve to feel like you're alone. This place will test your limits, and it's easy to lose sight of yourself...don't...feel powerless. You're not.
[Darres had no powers. Nothing special to defend himself with. All he had was skill alone, his beliefs, and a drive to continue. He's been to hell and back and he knew things he sometimes wished he never learned.]
I'm sorry for imposing.
no subject
It's not your fault that I feel that way, and... it's fine. You're just trying to help. Which is kind of weird, but...
I... appreciate you trying. [This guy said he had a rough life. How could he have gone through all of that, yet... Ganta paused a moment.]
I'm... an orphan, too. Not only that, but... [He wasn't about to explain what he was.]
The place I was in... before waking up here... was not that different from this place. Everyone there lied... and... I had finally found some people that could... rely on me... and...
I let them down, okay? [He closed his eyes for a moment. When he opens them, he looked... different. Determined.]
I don't want to do that, again, so... Just... tell me what I have to do to become strong, like you!
no subject
Darres was uncertain, but he wasn't the type to give up.]
I'll do what I can.
no subject
Ganta was looking at him with curiosity, realizing he asked this guy for help without knowing anything about him (besides the parts about his past, that is).
On the same note, this guy was offering to help him... without even knowing what kind of monster Ganta was. So, it all seemed pretty fair, put that way.]
By the way, do you have any... friends here?
no subject
...My wife...
[She was a queen. She was a wife, and she was the mother of his children. She was also his friend. She was many things to him.]
no subject
So you haven't made any friends, yet?
[Ganta's expression is softened as he looks up at Darres. That's really... pretty sad. Even though Ganta's pretty much... the same way, he can't help but be sad to see other people like that.]
no subject
Some people probably consider me their friend?
[He...just wasn't sure who considered him to be their friend.]
no subject
Ganta has that feeling, again. It actually... annoys him, a bit, this time.]
That's... kind of messed up. You don't consider them the same way? [Realizes how... horrible that sounds and takes it down, notch.]
Sorry, I didn't mean it like that. It's just... you never know when something could happen to take everyone away. And it doesn't matter if it happens once, it could always happen to your next set of friends. If you don't realize they're your friends... it really... messes you up.
So you should appreciate what you have, while you have it.
[He shifts uncomfortably.] I had to learn that the hard way... actually. Both times...
[He suddenly gives Darres a firm expression and decides that he's going to help this guy. There's only one way he can think to do it. This guy... just voluntarily helped him, after all.]
I can teach you how to have friends.
no subject
I don't talk to many people. [...] Or often.
[Just two that he could think of. So really. How could he have friends if he didn't talk to people?]
no subject
[Firm stare. This is just a taste of how stubborn Ganta is, unfortunately.]
You're already a nice person. That's the first step, right there. Being someone's friend isn't about words, anyway.
...Besides, words don't mean anything, on their own.
no subject
It's true that they don't. [A sigh.]
Being that you're still new here. Shouldn't you be more worried about settling?
no subject
Why the hell would I settle in a place like this? I plan on leaving, as soon as I figure out a way, so I'm not about to get all cozy!
[Relaxes a bit; he is obviously wound up with ease.]
If I don't find... some kind of distraction, I think I might go crazy, honestly.
[Puts a hand to his forehead.] If I sit still for too long, I won't be able to stop thinking about Shiro--... my friend--wondering if she's okay, or if she's hurt...
no subject
[While the confinement of their reality was no joke, it was bad to always think with the glass half empty. Of course Darres always had a way to maintain his harmonious like demeanor.]
Has she been in the tower previously? How long has she been missing?
no subject
She was just here... not too long ago. [How long has it been?] Honestly, all the days... have started to merge together. [He admitted this with a bit of embarrassment, actually.]
